NOWA Network of Women in Aquaculture proudly participated in the Regional Aquaculture Conference organized by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) of the FAO United Nations in Heraklion, Crete. This prestigious event provided a platform to address key challenges and opportunities in aquaculture, bringing together stakeholders from across the sector.
As a recognized partner, NOWA was honored to contribute technical expertise and insights at the conference. Our President Christina Zantioti and our General Secretary actively engaged with stakeholders through a dedicated booth, sparking meaningful discussions about gender inclusivity,
sustainable practices, and the empowerment of women in aquaculture. Visitors to the booth had the chance to learn about NOWA’s initiatives, exchange ideas, and explore potential collaborations to strengthen the sector.
A highlight of NOWA’s participation was the involvement of our President in the esteemed panel discussion, “Empowering Women and Small-Scale Aquaculture Producers.” During this session, the president shared NOWA’s journey, achievements, and challenges in advancing gender equity within the aquaculture industry. The discussion underscored the importance of inclusive practices to drive innovation and resilience in small-scale aquaculture operations.
This conference was a pivotal opportunity to tackle some of the most pressing challenges facing the aquaculture sector. It allowed stakeholders to align future targets, plan initiatives, create synergies, and enhance collaboration. NOWA is committed to advancing these objectives, and we look forward to continued partnerships that promote sustainability and inclusivity in aquaculture.
NOWA extends its gratitude to the GFCM and the FAO for hosting such an impactful event and for fostering a dialogue that inspires collective action.
