Women in Aquaculture: Meet Ms. Sana Touir

From a childhood fascination with dolphins to a passionate pursuit of sustainable ocean solutions, Sana's journey into aquaculture has been both inspiring and transformative. Driven by a love for the sea and a commitment to innovation, she is dedicated to exploring the potential of seaweed farming and advancing sustainable practices that support global food security and marine health.

What inspired you to pursue a career in aquaculture?

What inspired me to pursue a career in aquaculture began with a simple yet profound moment from my childhood. When I was six years old, I would practice swimming in my living room, wearing my favorite swimsuit adorned with dolphins. That early fascination with the sea sparked a lifelong love for the ocean and its mysteries. As I grew older, my curiosity deepened, and I became eager to learn more about marine life and the ecosystems that sustain it.

When it came time to choose my field of study, I knew I wanted to explore something that combined my passion for the sea with my interest in science. My university stood out as the perfect place to begin this journey, especially with its focus on biotechnology. Aquaculture, in particular, intrigued me—it was an exciting, lesser-explored field that felt like both a challenge and an opportunity.

Every day in this field brings new discoveries, and I am constantly mesmerized by the magic of aquaculture—how it can address global food security, protect marine ecosystems, and innovate sustainable practices. For me, aquaculture is not just a career nor about farming fish or seaweed, it’s a way to contribute to a healthier planet while staying connected to the ocean that has inspired me since I was that little girl in a dolphin swimsuit.

What is your current role, and what does a typical day look like for you?

I am a recent graduate actively exploring opportunities to enter the aquaculture field, with a particular focus on the seaweed industry. My days are dedicated to continuous learning about these valuable bioresources, from their cultivation and processing to their vast applications. I am driven by the goal of acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary to pave the way for seaweed farming in my country.

In addition to deepening my expertise, I am actively seeking international insights and best practices from experienced producers worldwide. By connecting with industry leaders and staying updated on innovations, I aim to contribute to the sustainable development of seaweed aquaculture and create new opportunities in this field

What has been your proudest achievement in aquaculture so far?

My proudest achievement in aquaculture so far has been completing my final study project during my academic journey. This project was particularly remarkable because it not only deepened my passion for the field but also allowed me to take full ownership of the entire process. From sampling and conducting tests to analyzing data and writing the final report, I was responsible for every step.

This experience taught me invaluable skills, such as working independently, problem-solving, and conducting constructive research. It was a transformative moment that showed me the importance of perseverance, attention to detail, and the ability to adapt to challenges. Most importantly, it reinforced my commitment to aquaculture and inspired me to continue exploring innovative solutions in this field
