NOWA participates at the GFCM's Technical Consultation on Sustainable Aquaculture Practices

On 11–12 February 2026, the President, Christina Zantioti and the Treasurer of NOWA, Garazi Rodriguez Valle, proudly participated in the Technical Consultation on Sustainable Aquaculture Practices, held in Athens and organized by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) and the Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP).

The consultation brought together more than 70 aquaculture producers, experts, and sector leaders from across the region. The meeting provided a valuable platform for exchanging knowledge and discussing the future of aquaculture, with a strong focus on innovation and sustainability. Key discussions explored the role of artificial intelligence in aquaculture, emerging innovations, spatial planning challenges, and the growing importance of restorative aquaculture practices.

During the consultation, NOWA had the opportunity to share its story, mission, and ongoing efforts to empower women and youth in aquaculture. In particular, NOWA highlighted some of its most recent achievements, including the successful organization of its first seminar dedicated to supporting women returning to the workplace after maternity or a career break—an important step toward building a more inclusive and supportive sector.

NOWA also proudly shared its recent FAO Technical Recognition Award, as well as its leadership role within the Working Group on Sustainable Aquaculture of the Global Youth Constituency for Fisheries and Aquaculture under the World Food Forum. These milestones reflect NOWA’s growing international recognition and its commitment to driving positive change in the aquaculture sector.

Participation in this important consultation strengthened NOWA’s connections with key stakeholders and reaffirmed its dedication to contributing to a more sustainable, innovative, and inclusive future for aquaculture.

NOWA looks forward to continuing its active engagement in international dialogue and to advancing opportunities for women and youth across the sector.
