About the event
Young women from the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions who aspire to build careers in aquaculture are invited to apply for an innovative, fully-funded training program this September.
Following the success of previous editions, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) proudly announces the third edition of its sustainable aquaculture practices program for young women. This year's event will be held in Spain from September 8 to 15, 2024.
About the ProgramThe program is a collaborative effort involving the GFCM, the Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP), and APROMAR, Spain's national aquaculture trade body. It aims to highlight and enhance the significant contributions of women in the aquaculture sector throughout the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions.
Focus and ObjectivesParticipants will delve into the latest advancements in aquaculture and gain hands-on experience with best practices in Spain. The program's objective is to empower young women by providing them with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the industry.
Key Components- Theoretical Sessions: Led by regional aquaculture experts, these sessions will cover best practices, emphasize the vital role of women in the sector, share success stories, and highlight the GFCM’s sustainable aquaculture development approach.
- Field Visits: Participants will visit various aquaculture environments, species, and production systems across Spain, offering a comprehensive understanding of Mediterranean aquaculture.
Building on the success of the second edition in Greece, which inspired the creation of NOWA, this program continues to support the GFCM’s 2030 Strategy for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture. The initiative is backed by Resolution GFCM/45/2022/1, which underscores the importance of creating an inclusive sector where women's contributions are fully recognized and supported.
Commitment to Sustainability and InclusionThe GFCM, along with its partners, is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and sustainable aquaculture sector. By empowering young women and acknowledging their contributions, the program aims to build a more resilient and innovative industry.
Join Us in SpainThe upcoming edition in Spain promises to continue the momentum of previous programs held in Tunisia and Greece. NOWA, born out of the inspiration from the Greece edition, will have some of its members participating in this event. This is an opportunity not only to learn and grow but also to be part of a community driving positive change in aquaculture.
Apply now to be part of this transformative experience and take a significant step towards a thriving career in aquaculture.
