Why NOWA ?
Women make up nearly 30% of the global aquaculture workforce, yet they are significantly underrepresented in leadership roles. This imbalance reveals a critical issue: despite their vital contributions across the aquaculture value chain—from production to processing and marketing—women's work is often undervalued and undercompensated.
Facing barriers such as limited access to resources, low representation in decision-making positions, and gender-specific workplace challenges, women in aquaculture are frequently confined to low-skilled, low-paid jobs. According to the FAO and the World Bank, 70% of the aquaculture processing workforce is female, primarily in roles that do not reflect their true potential.
Moreover, the informal nature of much of women’s work means their contributions often go unrecognized in official statistics. This lack of gender-disaggregated data makes it challenging to advocate for necessary changes, further underscoring the urgent need for a dedicated support network.
This is why NOWA was created. By providing a global platform for support, training, and advocacy, NOWA aims to bridge these gaps.
We promote gender equality and inclusivity, empowering women and enhancing their visibility.
Through mentoring programs, training courses, and networking opportunities, NOWA is committed to transforming the aquaculture industry and ensuring that women’s contributions are recognized and valued. Join us in driving sustainable growth and making a difference.
